If you're in the middle of wedding planning, you may of got to the point where you're thinking about adding more personalised touches to your wedding reception. When it comes to decorating your tables you might be leaning towards giving them names, instead of numbers, to make them more meaningful to you. However, coming up with names for each of them can be really hard! Believe me I have been there!
Being a wedding stationer for some time now, I have made my fair share of table numbers for brides and grooms, and I regularly get asked for custom requests to change them to names.(especially in my etsy shop) I really love doing this for couples, as it's really nice to help them add their own little personal touches into their wedding design. I have collected together my favourite ideas from couples that I have worked with in the past, to help you decide what to name yours.
There are some really fun and popular ideas here, that will help you think outside the box and apply some of your own love story, interests and personalities into your wedding day. I really hope you find something that compliments the both of you!
As well as it adding more meaning, by naming your tables, you are providing your guests with a great conversation starter, if they are sat with people they don't know yet, so for this reason alone they are a winning idea! It can be awkward for guests to find something to talk about, so this could really help break the ice.Naming tables can also help you tie your wedding theme together and add a unique element to your styling. It can also get you thinking about creative ways to display them too!

Ok; so let's look at your options;
Movie Titles
Are you and your partner film fanatics? Did you meet at the movies, like me and my hubby? Perhaps you love nothing more than snuggling up on the sofa at the weekend and watching a good rom com with a bowl of popcorn. Why not list your top favourites and use them to name your wedding tables. Don't forget, the length of the title will effect how your table names will be presented, so whatever you do, try not to choose super long film titles. This is what me and my hubby did, we chose the funny rom coms we watch all the time together.
Song Titles
Do you both love listening to music, is this more your thing? Perhaps you have some favourite tracks that you both love to listen to together. This would be a nice touch as you could also add them to your playlist for dancing to as well! You could use the titles of the songs to name your tables with. I have seen some fab ideas on Pinterest on how to display them with retro vinyls.
Destinations
This is a super popular idea among my past couples! What about naming your tables places you have visited together on your holidays so far together. Perfect for travel theme weddings. I think it's a popular choice among couples, as it's such a nice way to tell your love story to your guests. It could be a country, a city, a county, or maybe a landmark you have gone to. It's the perfect way to give a little back story on your adventures together. You could even add a photo of yourselves at each destination, I've had lots of requests for those!
I've had this lots of times as well, couples love using dates for table names. You could use dates that mark important milestones that have happened for you both, such as your first date, first kiss, first holiday, and when you moved in together. Again it's a fantastic way of telling your love story, but in a subtle way.
Book Titles
Do you prefer reading books? You may love poems or romantic novels? You may even have favourite books from your childhood or recent good reads that you both enjoy. This would be a unique touch and give your guests something to chat about. You can even use old vintage books to create a display with them. I did this with a table plan for a wedding set up, which you could totally re-create for on your tables as centrepieces. I used these torn edge table plan cards to create the display along with the matching table numbers/names on the tables. But I have other designs in my shop here to help you create something fun.
Quotes
You may be very fond of quotes, they could be things you say all the time in life or to each other. You may love a quote from a film or a quote from history. It is a great talking point for the guests as they will be busy discussing what it is from. Just be mindful the longer the quote is, the way you display them may need to be bigger too.
Pets
Couples love their pets, as do I! So why not make them part of your wedding day by using their names as your tables. I think it's such a nice touch when I see couples use past and present pets that they have had in their life, as it helps you tie in your whole story.
Romantic couples
I love this one, it's so fun! If your romance was a movie who would you both be?Danny and Sandy from Grease or Sam & Annie from Sleepless in Seattle? Why not name your tables famous couples you love watching on the big screen. It's such a romantic idea, you could even incorporate your favourite one liner from the movie.
Are you nostalgic about the sweets you used to eat when you was a child? Use all your favourites to name the tables, you could even include them as wedding favours on each place setting for your guests. Take them back down memory lane, with cola bottles and flumps!
Favourite drinks
Do you have a favourite tipple that you would like to showcase? Perhaps you are having signature drinks at the bar or a cocktail hour that would tie in really well with this. Tie the table names around the neck of drink bottles to help display them is a fun idea.
Favourite places to eat
Perhaps you are foodies and you have favourite restaurants, cafes or pubs, that you would like to include that tells your love story? Using places you had your first dates with each other is a nice way to incorporate your love story.
Sport fans
Is your life together filled with hobbies connected to sport? Perhaps you could name them after sport teams, captains, or players. I get lots of orders from golf themed weddings for my table number flags, which you can find here. They work perfectly!
Letters of the Alphabet
A unique idea is using some of the letters of the alphabet. Maybe you could spell out a word or use them to write what the meaning is underneath the letter. You could make a really interesting take on a pretty basic idea and have some creative fun with this concept.
Colours
Are you all about the colour? If your wedding theme is based around the colour scheme then this would work really well with it. You could use different shade names of your chosen colours, for example if you have chosen 'purple' you could have lilac, mauve, violet, amethyst and lavender.
There are loads of ideas here, so I hope something clicked with you as you were discovering your options. The main thing is that you choose names for your wedding tables that help tell your story and feel aligned with your theme and both your personalities.
