Becoming a wedding industry mentor to support & educate wedding pros

Written by Rea Shaw

For quite some time now, (I'm literally talking years here!) I've been wanting to start a new business that will educate, support and empower other wedding suppliers who are on their own business journey. It's something I've always loved talking about. But I've resisted many times to start it, as I thought I wouldn't really have the time to work on it, but the idea keeps presenting itself to me, in different ways, so I've decided to finally honour the call and I've took the plunge. And I couldn't be more thrilled with the decision! So here I am and I'm calling it 'Confetti Creators Corner'. I hope you enjoy being part of this journey with me.

So if you don't already know me, I'm Rea owner of Confetti Sweethearts, and I've worked in the wedding industry now for 9 years and I have learnt so so much from starting out as a wedding stationer with an Etsy shop, building an online presence with my own website, becoming a you tuber and to growing into an alternative wedding designer and stylist and dried flower florist.

In my 9 years I've build an abundance of business skills, knowledge and experience that I now naturally want to pass on to other wedding suppliers who find themselves at the very beginning or in the middle of their own business journey, and they would absolutely love some much needed guidance and support, that will help them develop their skills to create a thriving wedding business that supports the lifestyle they desire.

Where this exciting idea has come from

Since becoming a wedding stylist and not just being sat at my desk all the time making wedding stationery, I have had loads more opportunities to chat to other wedding suppliers in the industry, whether that's been at a networking events, wedding open days or styled shoots.

When wedding suppliers get together we tend to chat about the struggles we face in our business's whatever stage we are at, because sharing with like minded business owners is a comfort that you're not going through it alone. As I have had different chats with different types of suppliers over time, I have realised that I have gained a lot of worth while knowledge and experience that would highly benefit others with their progress. I see my past self in them, the business owner who was searching for all the answers.

Common questions that would keep arising in conversations when I spoke about my business to other Lincolnshire wedding suppliers would be; "What do you even blog about?" "How do you create so much content?" "I don't know how to use Pinterest, what do you do?" The more I heard things like this, the more I realised how much effective knowledge I'd actually built up. I actually felt like I had lots of secrets to myself! As I looked more into this and dived deeper, I realised that not many suppliers including wedding venues had a wedding blog, their business didn't exist on Pinterest, (shock horror!) And many were chasing and relying on sales only by social media (even more shock horror!) My initial reaction was to help these suppliers understand the importance of figuring these things out. Because if you are a wedding business that doesn't want to be constantly switched on 24/7, these things are vital to help your business grow over time and so you don't burn out and at worst, loss your enthusiasm.

My past experience

When I started my wedding business I had no one to ask 'how do I do it?' None of my friends run their own business, none of family had worked in the wedding industry or sold products on line. So I had to find out for myself, how I was going to run this new business venture of mine. I was no stranger to self employment as my past business was selling my hairdressing and beauty services to locals in my area, but I had little to no experience selling products. Apart from the odd can of hairspray!!

Anything that I needed to figure out I would look for the answer on You Tube or Google Search. I did find the answers eventually but the problem with it was that it took me ages to reach my goals and my potential. I can confirm, it was slow progress. I didn't have lots of funds either to keep throwing at education. I wasn't taking advice from wedding business owners, because I couldn't find that exact information at the time. No, I was taking advice from you tubers, online shop owners & doing courses from experts, on all the things I needed to learn like blogging, etsy, pinterest, website building, content marketing, social media and so on. I naturally thought everyone in the wedding industry was learning all these things, but it turns out not so much!

It took so long to build my business to a stage where I actually knew what I was doing. It also felt a pretty lonely journey, discovering what I needed to do.

What I want for you

I don't want that to be your story. If you are a wedding business owner who wants to build a successful wedding business quickly, then working with someone who has been where you want to go is your faster route.

I am really looking forward to stepping into this new role as a wedding mentor to help guide and support you. In fact, it's actually not the first time I've considered an educational role. When I qualified as a hairdresser and beautician, back in the day, my tutors at collage encouraged me to become a teacher of the subject, because they thought I had what it takes. I loved the idea, but I only refused because I didn't feel like I had enough experience to pass on to others starting out, and I was ready to start my own journey into self employment. So the fact that teaching thoughts have crept back into my mind after building years of experience in an industry, isn't really a huge surprise to me and one I feel I'm destining to do.

So what can you expect?

As I am at the very early stages of setting up this business I don't yet have it all figured out, I'll be honest. But, that makes me really excited to explore what I want to grow it into, at a natural pace. I will say though, after writing some juicy blog topics recently that I have lined up for you, I have started to get a really good sense. I've always loved chatting about content creation, I've even done instagram lives in the past, chatting about this very topic. So I know that content marketing and the strategy behind it, is going to be high on my agenda. So I looking at blogging and Pinterest in particular. I'm also slightly obsessed with staying organised as I want my business to feel simple, so productivity tips will be coming your way in abundance.
