What to write inside a wedding card

We have all been there, you buy the most beautiful card for the happy couple to open on their wedding day, you open it up and you don't know what on earth to write! There is nothing wrong with simply writing 'Congratulations', but sometimes depending on your relationship with the bride and groom you may want to write a little more. The good news is there are no rules when it comes to this, as long as it is a heartfelt and a positive message you can't go wrong! So here are some handy ideas to help you with it.
Formal Wedding Wishes

If the wedding day is likely to be a more formal or you simply don't know the couple all that well ,using a timeless and romantic message will fit perfectly.

-'Wishing you a lifetime of love and happiness.'
-'May today be the beginning of a long, happy life together.'
-'Your wedding day will come and go, but may your love forever grow'
-'Wishing you joy, love and happiness on your wedding day and as you begin your new life together.'
Informal/Casual Wedding Wishes
It maybe more your style and personality to write a short and sweet sentiment  inside your card, as long as it is nice and positive, wishing the happy couple all the best for their marriage, like these below.
-'Best wishes for a happy future together'
-'Many Congratulations on your wedding day'
-'Wishing you lots of love and happiness today and always'
-'Wishing you a long and happy marriage.'
-So happy to celebrate this day with you both!'
Funny Wedding Wishes
There is nothing wrong in writing something funny in your card, if you know the couple well enough you may have an inside joke or you just know it will make them laugh when they open it. Just avoid being sarcastic or insulting as this could be taken the wrong way.
- As Bill and Ted said, 'Be excellent to each other.'"
-'Our marriage advice: Love, honour and… scrub the toilet.' (Or fill in any other funny advice you have.)
-'Thanks for the free grub and booze. Best wishes on a long, happy marriage!'
Religious Wedding Wishes
If the happy couple are religious this maybe the best option. Consider the couples beliefs and practices and make it personal to them, if you are not to sure or the couple are not too religious it maybe best to write something more general as you wouldn't want them to feel uncomfortable.
-'May God bless you and your union.'
-'Sending you prayers for unending love and happiness.'
-'May the One who brought you together bless your marriage, enrich your lives and deepen your love throughout the years.'
Wedding Wishes for Family Members
When writing a card for family you may like to add a more personal message inside as you will be closer. Here are some ideas to help you with that.
-'Congratulations on your marriage, and welcome to the family!'
-'We're delighted to share this day with you both.'
-'Today, we add one more member to our family, and we couldn't be happier. Best wishes to you both.'
-'What a wonderful addition to our family. We're/I'm so happy to share in your celebration. Congratulations!'
"We/I couldn't be happier to call you both family. Best wishes for a long and happy future together.'
-'We/I love you both. Thanks for letting us share in your celebration!'
Wedding Wishes for Brother & Sister-in- law or Sister & Brother-in-law
Often with siblings they are who we know best, we have grown up with them and may want to recall joyful memories or share an inside joke. Just as long as you mention your in-law too!
-'Remember when you made that list of qualities of a 'perfect man/woman?' Well, you found him/her. Lots of love now and always.'
-'Lots of love to the best sister/brother in the whole world and her/his new partner for life. May you have a marriage full of love and happiness'
-'It seems like yesterday we were playing 'house' in the garden, and now you get to do it in real life. I couldn't be happier for you both. Congratulations!'
Wedding Wishes for your Son & Daughter-in-law or Daughter & Son-in-law
It is a big deal for any parent when their son or daughter is getting married. It maybe hard thinking of the right words to put on paper as there can be a lot of emotions going on. So here are a few messages to help you out.
-'We are/I am so happy to welcome a new son/daughter to the family.'
-'Best wishes to my son/daughter and son-in-law/daughter-in-law as you start your life together.'
-'Lots of love and happiness to you both on this exciting and joyful day for our family.'

Wedding Wishes for a Friend
Depending on your relationship with your friend you may want to be sentimental, funny, serious or personal with your message, this will help decide how you will want to write your card. 
-'Here's to love and friendship!'
-'We're so happy to call you both our friends. Congratulations!'
-'Of all the big life events we've celebrated over the years, today tops the list. Congrats!'
-'We've had so many laughs together! May you always make each other laugh!'
Wedding Wishes for a Work Collegue
You may want to be more general with your message if you do not see your work college out of the workplace. If you do spend time together out of work you may want to use one of the 'friend' messages instead.
-'Thank you for inviting me to share in this day with you and your family. Best wishes'
-'I'm so glad to have gotten to know you at work, and I wish you and your new husband/wife a long and happy life together.'
Wedding Wishes for a Parent/Step Parent
Whether your thrilled about your mum or dad's marriage or not, it is important to remember this is their happy day. But that does not mean you should write something you do not mean. As long as you wish them both happiness for the future together, because after all you do want them to be happy.
-'Congratulations! [Name of stepparent], you make my mum/dad so happy. I look forward to getting to know you better.'
-'Welcome to the family. We love you both!'
-'Mum/Dad, I'm so happy you found a partner to share your life with. Congratulations.'
